Brief History of Adamawa

Adamawa state is a state in the Nothern East part of Nigeria. The capital city is Yola. The state was formed from Gongola State in 1991. There were four administrative divisions which comprises of Adamawa, Ganye, Mubi and Numan. Adamawa occupies about 36,917 squares kilometres which makes it one of the largest states in Nigeria. It is bordered by Borno states to the northwest, to the west is Gombe States and Taraba to the Southwest. It also share border with Cameroon to the east. There are twenty one Local Government Areas in the state.

Modibo Adama

Adamawa was curled from the name of the founder of the kingdom, Modibo Adama who happened to be a regional leader of the Fulani Jihad organized by Alhaji Usman Dan Fodio of Sokoto in 1804. Modibo Adama cam from the Gurin region (now a small village). Adama conqured many lands and tribes after receiving green flag for leading the jihad in his native country in 1806 and later moved his capital to Ribadu in 1838, then to Joboliwo in 1839. Modibo Adama founded Yola in 1841 where he died in 1848. The area was colonozewd by Germany and then by Britain, fater colonizaton, the rulers remained Emirs and has continued to the present day.

Boko Haram News in Adamawa

Adamawa is one of the states that is being disturbed by the famous terrorist squad known as Boko Haram. A state of emergency was declared on May 14, 2013 by the then President Goodluck Jonathan along with neighbouring states, Borno and Yobe due to the activities of Boko Haram. Having been affected by the Islamist insurgency (Boko Haram) in Nigeria, the state has become home to internally displaced persons with the camps housing an estimate of 35,000 IDP’s fleeing violence from Boko Haram in Mubi, Madagali, Askira Uba, Bama and Gwoza in Adamawa State and Borno and Yobe States

Colleges and Univerisities

The state is home to American University of Nigeria located in Yola, Modibo Adama University of Technologu also in Yola and Adamawa State University located in Mubi.


The major occupaton of the people of Adamawa is farming. Their csh crops are cotton and groundnuts while food crops are maize, yam, guinea corn, millet and rice. Those living close to the banks of rivers engage in Fishing while the Fulanis rears Cattle.
