Brief History of Abia State

Abia State is a state in Nigeria located in the south eastern part of the Country. Umuahia is the state’s capital and Aba is the commercial hub of the state. Aba was a British colonized area of the region which makes it the most popular town in the state.

The name “Abia” was derived from four of the state’s densely populated regions Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo. There are seventeen Local government areas (LGAs) in the state. Abia people are mainly Igbos who are one of the indigenous peoples of Southeastern part of Nigeria. Their traditional language is Igbo as 95% of its citizens are predominantly Igbo people.English is widely spoken and serves as the official language in governance and business. Over 2.4 million people of Abia State are mainly Christians.

As one of the constituent states of the Niger Delta region, Abia state was created in 1991 from Imo state. The states is bounded by Anambra and Enugu State on the North and Ebonyi on the Northeast. To the west is Imo State and Rivers State to the south, Cross River and Akwa Ibom State to the east and southeast.

Crude Oil Exploration

The major activity in the state is Crude Oil and gas production and contributes over 39% of the state’s GDP. The state has over 100 Oil wells and 3 installed flow stations associated with a gas plant named Abia/NNPC gas plant.

Abia is producing 36,000 barrels of crude oil per day (23,000 from Imoturu and 8,000 from Isimili flow station) making it the fourth largest oil producing state in the country. Shell holds 80% of the licenses for oil wells in the state concentrating on 50 most high yield wells.


There are presently one federal owned university (Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture) a stated owned Abia State University and two private owned Universities (Gregory University Uturu and Rhema University in Aba) There are two tertiary hospitals, Federal Medical Center in the state capital Umuahia and Abia State University Teaching Hospitals in Aba. The city of Aba also housed the Abia State Polytechnic

Abia is considered to be one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria and a home for foreign investors. The nearest airport to Abia is Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport (Owerri Airport) which just an hour drive to Umuahia and Port Harcourt International Airport


The Executive Governor is the head of the State Executive Council which comprises the Deputy Governor, the Secretary to the state government and fourteen Commissioners. The Legislative arm of the government allows the Governor to appoint a minimum of three and a maximum of five special advisers.

The Legislature is made up of elected members of the state House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Majority leader, Majority whip, Minority leader, Minority whip and a number of House Functionaries There is also the staff of the House led by the Clerk of the House.

The Judicial arm of the government comprises the Chief Judge of the state, the President of the Customary Court of Appeal and the other Judges who presides at the Magistrate Courts, High Courts and Customary Courts in the state.
